Improving the Lives of Vulnerable Women and Street Children
Peace House Ministries is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable women and children. We have a passion to see those whose lives have been influenced by the ‘street’ experience healing and God’s Kingdom.
We work with women between the ages of 15-25 who have either been sex trafficked from a very young age, who are currently involved in prostitution, or who are vulnerable to being so. Most of the time, these girls have little education and no skills. For a year, they come to our day center where they receive training in income-generating projects. They become part of a community of people who love and accept them, and they discover a different way of life and community through discovery Bible studies and life skill lessons.
We also work with ‘street’ boys. The boys have usually dropped out of school and have either abandoned or have been abandoned by their parents. The street boys participate in different programs designed to teach discipline, integrity, and creativity. We work with them and their families to help get the boys back in school. We also have a short-term transition house for those who are coming off the streets. While the boys are in transition, we engage in “social work” with their families.
We believe that broken families are the true source of the problem, NOT the boy or girl on the ‘street.’ As such, we seek to plant communities and build networks of others who are trying to turn around their lives.
At the core of all the wounds that the ‘street’ inflicts is the experience of feeling unworthy, unwanted, and unloved. As Christians, we believe that the answer in the end is not charity, but solidarity. That is to say that we believe the true answer is genuine Christian community. A key part of this is establishing what we call ‘Kingdom Communities’. Holistic transformation will demand that new communities form around new values. In doing this we rely on a simple discovery Bible study process that has been proven to help offer an alternative narrative to that of the street.
